Bacteria make major evolutionary shift in the lab

NewScientist is running a story on an exciting new development in evolutionary biology. In short, scientists have watched a new, complex evolutionary trait develop in the lab. This mutation occurred in a population of Escherichia coli bacteria that has been in isolated development for 20 years. The evolution of these bacteria has been observed for over 44,000 generations, and has suddenly acquired the ability metabolize citrate.

Jerry Coyne, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Chicago notes: “The thing I like most is it says you can get these complex traits evolving by a combination of unlikely events,” he says. “That’s just what creationists say can’t happen.”

There is some weird ’shit’ going on in this world:

The Bush Administration has been cracking down on obscenity across the country and a very interesting (and very disgusting) case is being heard by a jury in Los Angeles. At issue is the work of Ira Isaacs who produces and sells videos of so called “poo porn” involving bestiality and sexual fetish films involving feces and urine.

It does not take a trial to decide that Isaacs and his clients are pretty creepy. However, the question is whether the government should be able to criminalize such consensual films. This is where a line must be drawn. Bestiality is legitimately a crime for abuse of the animals. Yet, this is an obscenity trial. If adults voluntarily engage in disgusting fetish films, there should be serious constitutional privacy and free speech concerns.

Issacs insists that this is part of his artistic expression and intends to take the stand to defend it. The 57-year-old Los Angeles advertising agency owner has participated in a few of the films and largely produces them and sells them. He says that he is a “shock artist” and is “fighting for art.” I am not sure about that claim, but I am more comfortable with the claims of free speech and association…

Nader Has My Support

B’Man: Some of you may have received this email notice and invite from me via email. I have decided that Ralph Nader is the candidate for me to support. I have looked at all the independents and I believe that Ralph matches my desires as well as any and probably stands the best chance at winning this election (polling 6% without any MSM coverage at all). People are looking for better than the two we have been offered by the controllers of our democracy.

We can take it back, but you must get on board.

Dear Friend:
We have no real choice between the two mainstream candidates. McCain has lost his elderly mind and turned into the worst neocon that could walk Washington. Obama proved he is just about as “right” on military matters as McInsane is and will do little to nothing to squash the military industrial complex’s spending.

What will that leave us in this election year?

Same old Big Money control as usual. Nothing really changes.

If this happens, we have two choices – throw in the towel.
Or fight back.
If we choose to fight back, here’s a good option: Join with a person whose life is one of dedicated service to the public interest.

To help him organize a political campaign in every state against corporate control over our lives.

Luckily, that person – Ralph Nader – is running such a campaign. But he will need active and informed citizens in every Congressional district in the country.

He will need volunteers.

He will need funds.

He will need dedication.

That’s why I’ve signed on at Nader’s campaign web site at www.votenader.org and just gave $50 (all I can afford right now) to help him best I can. I plan to work locally to get him elected, as well.
