Where Is The Justice In Our Health Care System?
Posted by BuelahMan on May 24, 2009
I haven’t written about this to date because I don’t normally get on the band wagons of gathering money (sadly, I am too broke to give much of anything) and have only posted about political fund raising. But today I feel like I must say something about my friend Writechic and her aim to help her friend Veronica.
Veronica is Eric De La Cruz’s sister. Eric is in very bad shape, closing in on death… but there is an effort going on that should wake some of these assholes at UCLA Transplant Center. There is one, in particular that needs some online rabble-rousing and his info is below:
- UCLA Heart Transplant Program
- Jon A. Kobashigawa, M.D.
- jonk@mednet.ucla.edu
- (310)794-1200
I plan to call and write, myself, but first one needs to understand more about Eric’s plight and what he and his sister have been doing to get help. Eric was denied the transplant because he doesn’t have health insurance and not enough money. He has a preexisting condition and insurance won’t sign him up. They were able to get him on Medicare, but now the hospital finds another reason to deny him… Supplemental Insurance. Veronica writes:
They are denying him because now they say he needs supplemental insurance (which no one will give to someone with a pre-existing condition). This is AFTER he got approved for Medicare.
His kidneys are shut down and he is on continuous IV’s. He is battling this thing, but with little help from Big Meds.
Update from jesseluna in comments:
One clarification is that Eric does have insurance but only in Nevada, where they don’t have a heart transplant center. For more information and for ways to support Eric, you can go to www.weloveeric.com. ~@jesseluna on Twitter
You can send donations here:
LifeGiver project c/o Storey Dreams Foundation
499 N. Canon Drive, Suite 400, Beverly Hills, CA 90210Note: Make to put Eric De La Cruz in the memo line
Now what makes this all the more horrifying is that this effort has attracted Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, who has raised $660,000 and Tony Hawk has donated 100 signed skateboards to raise money for the cause.
Yet, when Veronica called the hospital, the comment from Ilona in financing/collections was:
“you’ve only raised 500k? Well, that’s not enough for a transplant.”
The Hippocratic Oath apparently only works in monetary amounts way over 1/2 Million Dollars.
People, is this reason enough to insist on change in the system? I say so.
If you can help Eric, with money, a letter or a call to the assholes who are denying him, perhaps we can make a dent in their armour enough to convince them that the press, alone, will not be worth the laughs (yeah, they snicker at Veronica in the back ground as she fights her way up the chain of command.)
Veronica asked the question you see in the title. The answer is that there is none until we FORCE it from the citizenry.

Thank you for this – I have donated and am encouraging others to do the same in my neck of the woods. Eric’s situation puts the spotlight on a much larger issue – our nations health care system is clearly flawed. With that being said, it has been amazing to see what the power of social media can do in bringing so many people together.

As a Panamanian resident, I literally CANNOT help this person in any material way other than re-telling the story on blogs or Facebook. Barack Obama was quite specific in letting all former American residents or citizens living in South America that we are US subjects for the 15 years following the date of our departure and that materially participating politically in American affairs is a Felony which his Justice Department will prosecute as part of his “anti-tax haven” [class-warfare, xenophobic, jealousy of Hillary Clinton's popularity in Europe and South America] initiative.
And he’s figured out that he can win points with his personal discomfort with and bigotry towards Latinos.
I’d send money but the Justice Dept will just intercept the check or wire at the correspondent bank and the money will be kicked back to me as with every third child support payment or so I send to my ex.
The felony part is a stupid joke. Obama can fantasize about his global dominance, but there’s no extradition treaty, and he can fuck himself sideways. I’ve been a MODEL Panamanian resident and have created good union jobs. So, I’m chill. To the President I stick up my middle finger because the World Court does not accept the notion that I’m a United States “subject.” It absolutely affirms every element of the Jimmy Carter/Omar Torrijos Accord of 1980 and the Bill Clinton/Ernesto Perez-Balladares Accord of 1999.
Christ, I have a close friend whose dad needs a new kidney, too. He’s far down the list and despite my friend being one of the best tournament poker players in the country, he just doesn’t have the $1 million in cash to pay should his father survive until he gets to the top of list which is a longshot.
Don’t believe the anti-single payer propaganda, ANYBODY. In Venezuela, national health will guarantee your position on the list and subsidize the organ, surgery and care to MAYBE $100,000 out of pocket maximum. The surgery would be performed in a first-class Caracas hospital by a team of UCLA or Mt Sinai-trained Venezuelan surgeons. But why would anyone want to have “socialized” medicine especially given to you by America’s Greatest Threat To Hemispheric Stability ™, President Chavez of the PSOV?

I’m impressed, I must say. Actually hardly ever do I encounter a weblog that’s each educative and entertaining, and let me let you know, you may have hit the nail on the head. Your concept is excellent; the problem is something that not sufficient persons are talking intelligently about. I am very comfortable that I stumbled throughout this in my search for something referring to this.
