When I was a kid, Tom was a singing hero of mine. Even today when I see these old clips, I am amazed at his performing ability. Match him up with Janis (who could bring down the house) and you have something pretty special.

I want to thank all the visitors and regulars that have been reading the garbage I spew around here. I noticed this morning that attendance and views have doubled in the last week or so. Would you believe that the only ones Max Baucus allows at the table are the same ones who keep America sick by investing into tobacco companies and products? This should be the last straw, but methinks Americans are wimps and won’t stand up.
Major US, Canadian and British life and health insurance companies have billions of dollars invested in tobacco companies, a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine said.
Wesley Boyd, the study’s lead author, found that at least $US4.4 billion ($5.5 billion) in insurance company funds are invested in companies whose affiliates produce cigarettes, cigars and chewing tobacco.
“It’s clear their top priority is making money, not safeguarding people’s well-being,” he wrote.
Tobacco is considered the leading cause of lung cancer and a major risk factor for heart attack, stroke, pulmonary disease and cancer.
According to the World Health Organisation, it is a contributing factor in 5.4 million deaths a year.
Researchers first revealed that health and life insurance companies had major investments in tobacco companies in 1995 in an article in the British medical journal Lancet.
“Although investing in tobacco while selling life or health insurance may seem self-defeating, insurance firms have figured out ways to profit from both,” Mr Boyd wrote.
“Insurers exclude smokers from coverage or, more commonly, charge them higher premiums. Insurers profit – and smokers lose – twice over.”
According to the study, US insurer Prudential Financial has $US264.3 million ($328 million)dollars invested among three US tobacco companies, including Reynolds America and Philip Morris.
Canadian insurer Sun Life Financial, which sells life, disability and health insurance, has a stock portfolio with more than one billion dollars in two tobacco companies, including $US890 million ($1.1 billion) in Philip Morris.
What this boils down to is that they can invest in keeping you sick and then deny you coverage (or charge exorbitant prices for those people that smoke) when you become ill (and most people will become ill after smoking for a long enough period).
The American Sheople better wake up soon, because you know that the leadership in Congress is not on your side when they, too, are enriched and empowered by these same assholes investing in tobacco.

Donald Gips, the nominee to serve as ambassador to South Africa, bundled at least $500,000 for Obama’s presidential run. Nicole Avant, the nominee for the ambassador post in the Bahamas, also bundled at least half a million. David Jacobson, the nominee for the ambassador to Canada, brought in between $50,000 and $100,000.
U.S. presidents have long rewarded big campaign donors, fundraisers and other loyalists with ambassadorships, and Obama looks to be continuing that tradition. As we reported last week, half of the ambassadors he named at that time were big donors and bundlers. This week, Obama adds three more to a list that is likely to keep growing.

This, again, reminds me of Spike the Bulldog and Chester the Terrier of Looney Tunes fame in their Sylvester cartoon called Tree for Two. In this episode, Spike is the bad ass fighter (like America) and Chester the Terrier is the little sidekick (like Israel). Spike is asked by Chester to take out a cat (Sylvester, the Palestinians) from a alley way. Unbeknown to Spike (who would easily oblige his little buddy’s request) a Panther (Iran) has escaped from the zoo and is hiding out in the very same alley.
Each time that Chester asks Spike to go in, the panther steps in and puts the hurt on Spike. Chester will go back into the alley and see Sylvester and simply cannot understand why his hero is unable to take out little Sylvester.
By the end, Chester has whipped Sylvester and Spike is now the fawning sidekick. It appears to me that we have reached this level in our relationship and it is too late, except to stop the funding and let them hadnle their own stuff from now on.
