B’Man’s Patriot Watch: Rep. Anthony Weiner, (D-NY09)

Posted by BuelahMan on July 22, 2009

OK, at least from the Single Payer Healthcare standpoint he is a Patriot. I need to learn more about him, but this is the way to speak truth to power (and a few ReTHUGlican idiots and their complacent Demublican dingle berries):

Weiner Blasts the Critics of Health Reform

From AfterDowningStreet:

Ask the Energy and Commerce Committee to Vote YES on the HR 676 Amendment

The silence in the House of Representatives around single-payer healthcare and H.R. 676 will end this Wednesday. Rep. Anthony Weiner, (D-NY09), who has already rankled Republicans and Blue Dogs with his no-nonsense statements before the House Energy and Commerce hearing on H.R. 3200, will move to amend the current bill. His proposal is essentially to replace H.R. 3200 with H.R. 676—single payer Medicare for All.

This exciting and potentially monumental move needs our support. We pushed Rep. Dennis Kucinich’s amendment to victory last Friday, and we can do it for Representative Weiner, too.

The full committee and its five subcommittees are spending the next three days debating the bill and performing their markups. This is the time to act, and Representative Weiner is making his move.

Call or fax the committee members and tell them you want them to support Representative Weiner’s proposal. Listen to his blunt analysis in Friday’s session of what real healthcare reform is made of, and you’ll get some good ideas of what to say when you call or fax. It’s a no-holds-barred, take-no-prisoners approach to the legislative process almost never heard on the House floor.

B’Man: I know quite a bit about Anthony Weiner because I lived in New York City many years. He’s a Congressman from an oddly-shaped district which is drawn TO THE SPECIFIC STREET across two boroughs, Brooklyn and Queens, so as to guarantee a majority White, conservative or orthodox Jewish voting cohort. The remainder of his district is divided up among Puerto Ricans, Afro-Caribbean Americans, and Asian-Americans. This may sound like a lot of diversity given how most American Congressional districts are drawn, but believe me, nobody buy a pro-Zionist Jew will ever be elected to the House from NY’s 9th. It just so happens that Kings and Queens counties, NY, are the two most ethnically-diverse counties in the USA. While I can never accept his view on these issues, the nature of New York City, its history, and immigration patterns mean that the 9th will never produce a very retrograde thinker across ALL issues, either.

The wikipedia entry on him is pretty fair. It leaves out a couple of interesting points. When he ran for Mayor of NYC, he was considered the most right-wing Democrat in the race and not only because of his views on Israel. He was by far the most supportive of the so-called “Atlantic Yards” development project that would have made 10,000s homeless and would have essentially allowed Bruce Ratner and Magic Johnson a free-roll on a couple of billion dollars worth of real estate. Public protest and market conditions have stopped the project for the time being.

Personally, he is known as something of a playboy sharing a town-house in DC with a number of other politicians which is well-known for its out of control parties. I’ve never heard or read that his personal life has interfered with his legislative abilities one way or the other.

None of this makes Anthony Weiner a bad person. It’s a fact of political life and how he personally self-identifies. His view of his Jewishness is probably close to 180 degrees different than my view of mine.

His political views outside of Israel policy (and to be fair outside of all US foreign policy) can be considered garden-variety Centrist Democratic.

In sum, I can’t say that he’s my favorite legislator by any stretch of the imagination. Had I been in New York then and a registered Democrat, I would NOT have supported Anthony Weiner in the primary.

I am not surprised, however, that he has adopted a strong Single-Payer posture for any number of reasons, including sincere belief in the cause.

Had you told me that Weiner was one of the most anti-Single Payer Democrats in Congress, I would have believed that as well.

      Damn,

Thanks for the head’s up. After seeing this, I wonder why he is on board for Single Payer? Surely it is sincere belief.

Anyway, maybe not POTUS material, but he he is Patriot standing with just a few “on this issue”. Maybe I should rename it “hero”, for even assholes can be heroes every now and again.

    • I think what both of you are missing is that the title of the video says “Weiner Blasts”.

  2. Healthcare is a political impossibility!
