When George Harrison passed away in November 2001, the music world paid tribute to him through the now infamous, Concert for George. Held at the Royal Albert Hall a year after Harrison’s death, it was organized by Eric Clapton and contained performances from several of Harrison’s friends including Clapton, Tom Petty, and Paul McCartney. While that show was a very fitting tribute to his life and music, it often overshadows the performance of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” at the 2004 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.
After being inducted by fellow Traveling Wilburys’ members Jeff Lynne and Petty, several musicians took to the stage for one of the best covers of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” that’s out there. Petty played lead acoustic guitar alongside Dhani Harrison, now a member of thenewno2, while Lynne played rhythm electric guitar. Many other musicians packed the stage to fill in the sound of record. Both Lynne and Petty shared vocal duties with Petty singing the chorus and Lynne handling the verses. Both of their vocals help make this a great performance as they capture the sad tone of the song as well as holding true to Harrison’s original version found on The White Album.
Although Dhani doesn’t have much to do during the song besides play along and sing backing vocals on the chorus, you can’t help but watch him. While it’s clear that all the people on stage are emotionally invested in the performance, the late ex-Beatles’ son is on a whole different emotional level. Even though his face, an almost spot-on copy of a young George, doesn’t reveal this, it still feel like he’s making the most of what he can in honor of his father.
While the performance is good all around, it’s the ending that really takes it to another level. Just when it seems that the song is winding down, Prince, another 2004 inductee, appears out of nowhere and launches into a stunning solo that lasts for almost three minutes. Decked out in a red fedora and shirt, Prince shatters all the tricks in the book, as he runs the pick up and down the neck of the guitar, intentionally falls backwards off the stage only to be caught by a stagehand (earning a big smile from Dhani), and even appears to play with his teeth for a second. This might sound overdone for a song like “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” but the solo really works for the performance due to the emotion put into it. The repeated singing of the last line of the chorus by Petty allows Prince to start up a new part of the solo every time it’s sung.
This cover version of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” is one of the best out there. The emotions of George Harrison’s friends and family seem to burst out through Prince’s solo at the end. At first, you may think the song is a mourning of Harrison’s death but by the end, you realize that it’s really a celebration of his life.

The Tennessee Valley Authority announced Thursday that for the second straight quarter, its fuel cost adjustment would fall.
The 7 percent reduction follows a 6 percent cut in January.
In October, because of skyrocketing fuel costs, TVA raised rates 17 percent, the highest since 1974. Average household bills rose about $20 a month.
Like other utilities, TVA uses a fuel cost adjustment to recover fuel costs.
“In these economically challenging times, we are especially glad lower fuel costs will provide some relief in power costs to the consumers in the Tennessee Valley,” said TVA President and CEO Tom Kilgore.
The reductions since the start of the year bring welcome relief, especially in an uncertain economy.
“This is great news,” said Johnny Timmons, who heads Tupelo Water & Light.
About 60 percent of TVA’s power is generated by fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gas. In its fiscal year 2008, TVA said it spent nearly 40 percent of its total revenue – $4.2 billion – on fuel and purchased power. During the first quarter of the current fiscal year, it has spent $1.4 billion.
Timmons said TVA will be using more hydro power to generate electricity thanks to increased rainfall, unlike in recent years.
“When TVA couldn’t generate enough power, it had to buy on the open market, which is extremely expensive,” he said. “But it looks like things are getting better. We could all use the break.”
You’ve heard about the Stanford Financial ponzi scheme, right?
Did you know that some of the main culprits live in Mississippi (I had no idea there was Big Money in Mississippi). I mean, really. Baldwyn, MS????
Although I do realize that basically all the politics in MS is corrupt.
Stanford Financial Group CEO Robert Allen Stanford, a Texas billionaire who has a home in the Virgin Islands, Chief Financial Officer James Davis and Chief Investment Officer Laura Pendergest-Holt, both of Baldwyn, were charged Tuesday by the Securities and Exchange Commission of bilking investors out of about $8 billion in high-yield certificates of deposit. Big bankers, especially the Wall Street investment banking types, haven’t been exactly viewed with a lot of sympathy or regard in recent months.
One banker in Miami, however, clearly shows that all bankers are not created equal. Here’s an excerpt from a story in the Miami Herald:
Lots of bosses say they value their employees. Some even mean it. And then there’s Leonard Abess Jr.
After selling a majority stake in Miami-based City National Bancshares last November, all he did was take $60 million of the proceeds — $60 million out of his own pocket — and hand it to his tellers, bookkeepers, clerks, everyone on the payroll. All 399 workers on the staff received bonuses, and he even tracked down 72 former employees so they could share in the windfall.
For longtime employees, the bonus — based on years of service — amounted to tens of thousands of dollars, and in some cases, more than $100,000.
At a time when financial titans are being paraded before Congress to explain how they blew billions on executives’ bonuses even as they received a taxpayer bailout, the big-hearted banker’s selfless deed stands out.
Abess didn’t publicize what he had done. He didn’t even show up at the bank to bask in his employees’ gratitude on the day the bonus envelopes were distributed. He was inundated with letters soon afterward.
Asked later what motivated him, Abess said he had long dreamed of a way to reward employees. He had been thinking of creating an employee stock option plan before he decided to sell the bank.
“Those people who joined me and stayed with me at the bank with no promise of equity — I always thought someday I’m going to surprise them,” he said. “I sure as heck don’t need (the money).”
B’Man: Leonard Abess, Jr is a walking miracle of a man. As a commenter at BizBuzz said, “I hope my boss is reading this.”
The Obama Promise Tracker is an electronic tool with which to follow all the promises the new President has made – 895 by its inventor Todd Smiths count. Of these 895 promises, made between February 10 2007 – the day he announced his candidacy – and November 4 – the day he was announced President-elect – 14 are tagged under “Foreign Policy, Israel”.
The first, “I will bring to the White House an unshakable commitment to Israel’s security”, is a commitment hard to define. Obama also promised to make the peace process “a key diplomatic priority”. This is easier to check, and one Obama is evidently serious about. Proof: the appointment of George Mitchell as special envoy to the Arab-Israeli peace process.
Mitchell is not new to this contentious conflict. He was in the Middle East over eight years ago, appointed by President Bill Clinton, to report on the raging second intifada. The report was not very helpful. The intifada continued. One of his recommended measures was not well received by the Israeli government: to halt development in the settlements, including measures taken to meet the needs of “natural growth”.
“We can’t ask people not to have children. We can’t ask the children not to live with their families,” Israeli opponents claimed.
Mitchell is coming back to a different Middle East. In the past eight years Yasir Arafat died, the intifada was defeated, Israel evacuated Gaza and Hamas was elected. Mitchell will find a Palestinian leader who is willing but incapable and a new Israeli government that needs time to organize. A realistic, modest approach will have to be formulated. One thing can ignite some friction: the man who wanted a total settlement freeze cannot be expected to let Israel off on illegal outposts. The promise that Israel made to evacuate them will have to be executed. This might be possible for a government of the right-centre (more likely) or centre-left (less so, according to polls). It will be very difficult for a government of the right, headed by Likuds Binyamin Netanyahu and supported by right-wing parties only. Netanyahu knows that for his own good, he needs Labor, Kadima or both as part of his coalition.
But for most Israelis, Obama’s commitment will not be tested in Palestine, but rather in Iran. Smith’s Promise Tracker notes three promises: “incentives” for Iran to abandon its nuclear program; a promise to “tighten sanctions”; and “direct diplomacy, without preconditions”. This will be enough only if Iran agrees.
Obama has not always been consistent regarding Iran. Earlier this week, I sent Smith a quote from my May 2007 interview with Obama: “I don’t think it would be appropriate for us to engage in full-scale diplomatic discussions without some progress or some indication of good faith on the part of the Iranians,” the then senator said. “I do think the US needs to send a signal to Iran that if they change their behavior that they have avenues available to them for improved international relations.”
This assertion somewhat contradicts his later promise for unconditional high-level talks. Smith will add the quote to the next edition of the Obama Promise Tracker. This will present a dilemma to those following these promises: do they want the first promise to materialize, or the second?

Vibration White Finger can cause numbness and disabling pain
British miners have been awarded compensation after they developed Vibration White Finger, a condition caused by working with vibrating machinery such as chain saws and drills. The condition is one form of Raynaud’s Disease which affects one in 10 women, usually with mild symptoms. Women are nine times more likely to suffer from the disease as men. What is Raynaud’s Disease?
Raynaud’s is caused by a restriction in the blood supply to the extremities, usually the fingers and toes.
It can also affect the ears and nose. The parts initially turn white and dead-looking and then become inflamed. An attack may be accompanied by significant pain, numbness or a tingling sensation.
With Vibration White Finger (VWF), the fingers may go into spasm.
This is due to an intermittent lack of blood supply to the fingers.
The condition is usually not severe and attacks only cause minor discomfort. But it can lead to skin ulcers and even gangrene.
And it can be progressive over a period of several years.
VWF is triggered by continuous use of vibrating hand machinery, but some forms of primary Raynaud’s have no trigger.
The disease can also be genetically inherited.
However, in these cases, the attacks are usually mild.
Secondary Raynaud’s is less common and more severe. It is linked to underlying diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis.
What triggers attacks?
Prolonged exposure to the cold is a major trigger for the disease.
Smoking and stress are also thought to be factors and the disease can be caused by a reaction to beta blocker drugs.
People who work with vibrating machinery are more likely to develop VWF, which can become irreversible.
Vibration White finger (VWF) causes the fingers to become numb and begin turning white.
Symptoms include:
Tingling and numbness in the fingers which often continues after the machinery has been switched off;
One fingertip temporarily turns white and may start to ache;
The finger turns white with increasing frequency;
Other fingers begin turning white, but the thumb is not usually affected. After several fingers turn white, the disease is probably irreversible;
The person suffers increasingly frequent painful attacks at any time.
Eventually, the person may lose their fingers. This only happens in extreme cases, for example, when people are working with vibrating machinery in very cold conditions, but it is more common in the forestry industry among people working with chainsaws.
Treatment–
Discontinuing the use of vibrating equipment and keeping hands warm and dry.
This movie was discussed at my family Christmas in New Jersey. I was actually amazed at how many of my cousins had never heard of it…. and considering I am the oldest living relative at this time [geeeece].. it was me and my cousins kids [college age] that had seen it. It is the cult classic of the decade. This flick is not for anyone who is younger than 18[? that's relative], it is very very violent and graphic… and the ‘f’ word is countless. But, I must say– it is quoted by fans more than any other flick, I have seen it numerous times, it actually made me laugh my ass off… and the characters are so clearly defined and fit the story perfectly. Have any of you seen it? …let’s have a ‘Latte’ and share thoughts. lol lol
* when Rocco runs into the apartment to announce they all have to leave…
[unless you have seen this flick, you can't appreciate how funny this is actually]
FRANCISCO – Users of all current versions of Microsoft Corp.’s Internet Explorer browser might be vulnerable to having their computers hijacked because of a serious security hole in the software that had yet to be fixed Monday.
The flaw lets criminals commandeer victims’ machines merely by tricking them into visiting Web sites tainted with malicious programming code. As many as 10,000 sites have been compromised since last week to exploit the browser flaw, according to antivirus software maker Trend Micro Inc.
The sites are mostly Chinese and have been serving up programs that steal passwords for computer games, which can be sold for money on the black market. However, the hole is such that it could be “adopted by more financially motivated criminals for more serious mayhem — that’s a big fear right now,” Paul Ferguson, a Trend Micro security researcher, said Monday.
“Zero-day” vulnerabilities like this are security holes that haven’t been repaired by the software makers. They’re a gold mine for criminals because users have few ways to fight off attacks.
The latest vulnerability is noteworthy because Internet Explorer is the default browser for most of the world’s computers. Also, while Microsoft says it has detected attacks only against version 7 of Internet Explorer, which is the most widely used edition, the company warned that other versions are also potentially vulnerable.
Microsoft said it is investigating the flaw and is considering fixing it through an emergency software patch outside of its normal monthly updates, but declined further comment. The company is telling users to employ a series of complicated workarounds to minimize the threat.
Many security experts, meanwhile, are urging Internet Explorer users to use another browser until a patch is released.
Vulnerability in Internet Explorer Could Allow Remote Code Execution
Published: December 10, 2008 | Updated: December 13, 2008
Microsoft is continuing its investigation of public reports of attacks against a new vulnerability in Internet Explorer. Our investigation so far has shown that these attacks are only against Windows Internet Explorer 7 on supported editions of Windows XP Service Pack 2, Windows XP Service Pack 3, Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1, Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2, Windows Vista, Windows Vista Service Pack 1, and Windows Server 2008. Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 Service Pack 4, Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1, Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, and Windows Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2 on all supported versions of Microsoft Windows are potentially vulnerable.
This update to the advisory contains information about a new workaround and a recommendation on the most effective workarounds.
The vulnerability exists as an invalid pointer reference in the data binding function of Internet Explorer. When data binding is enabled (which is the default state), it is possible under certain conditions for an object to be released without updating the array length, leaving the potential to access the deleted object’s memory space. This can cause Internet Explorer to exit unexpectedly, in a state that is exploitable.
At this time, we are aware only of limited attacks that attempt to use this vulnerability against Windows Internet Explorer 7. Our investigation of these attacks so far has verified that they are not successful against customers who have applied the workarounds listed in this advisory. Additionally, there are mitigations that increase the difficulty of exploiting this vulnerability.
We are actively working with partners in our
Microsoft Active Protections Program (MAPP) and our Microsoft Security Response Alliance (MSRA) programs to provide information that they can use to provide broader protections to customers. In addition, we’re actively working with partners to monitor the threat landscape and take action against malicious sites that attempt to exploit this vulnerability. Current trending indicates that there may be attempts to utilize SQL Injection attacks against Web sites to load attack code on those Web sites. If you’re a Web site operation, please review Microsoft Security Advisory (954462), which provides information on tools you can use to analyze your Web site’s code to help protect against SQL Injection attacks. We are actively investigating the vulnerability that these attacks attempt to exploit. We will continue to monitor the threat environment and update this advisory if this situation changes. On completion of this investigation, Microsoft will take the appropriate action to protect our customers, which may include providing a solution through a service pack, our monthly security update release process, or an out-of-cycle security update, depending on customer needs.
Microsoft continues to encourage customers to follow the “Protect Your Computer” guidance of enabling a firewall, applying all software updates and installing anti-virus and anti-spyware software. Additional information can be found at
Protected Mode in Internet Explorer 7 and Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2 in Windows Vista limits the impact of the vulnerability.
•
By default, Internet Explorer on Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008 runs in a restricted mode that is known as
Enhanced Security Configuration. This mode sets the security level for the Internet zone to High. This is a mitigating factor for Web sites that you have not added to the Internet Explorer Trusted sites zone.
•
An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the local user. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less affected than users who operate with administrative user rights.
•
Currently known attacks cannot exploit this issue automatically through e-mail.
For the last two weeks I have wondered where the f– the web-mail log-ins with odd names were coming up for. I kept thinking : Has my server changed?” Thank goodness I just clicked onto something else.
I have been predicting this for quite some time and I am also willing to bet that the new VW plant in Chattanooga will be delayed before it even gets ramped up. This Toyota plant was over 90% complete and it may NEVER build a single car. From Biz Buzz:
Toyota officials have announced the Prius plant near Blue Springs will be delayed indefinitely.
Toyota said the deteriorating automotive market was the main reason for delaying the opening of the plant. Japanese newspaper reports said Sunday that Toyota was going to suspend projects worldwide, including the Prius plant.
Excerpts Toyota’s announcement, courtesy of Lacy Luckett, of Toyota Motor Manufacturing Mississippi:
Since the building is 90 percent complete, Toyota will go ahead and finish that portion of the project. This will bring Toyota’s total investment to date of about $300 million.
The company’s ultimate goal is to make the best decisions to assure stability and balance in all our plants and communities.
We do appreciate the patience and understanding the people of Mississippi have shown in recognizing this as an extraordinary and unprecedented time for the auto industry.
We are committed to opening the Mississippi plant when the market allows.
Luckett said that TMMMS employees already hired will continue working for the company.
