B’Man’s Sabbath Watch: The Religion Of Anti-Semitism

This is an amazing film. I am torn. Should I feel sorry that the Jewish children are raised to be fearful of something the film itself shows is largely bogus or should I be pissed that they are stupid enough to fall for the lies? Virtually every example of supposed anti-Semitism is so insanely untrue that any moron should be able to see through it. I recommend this with Seven Thumb’s Up (I’ll borrow 2.5 people to accomplish this). The “real Jew” tells like it is early on. Kudos to Granny.

What is Antisemitism today, two generations after the Holocaust? In his continuing exploration of modern Israeli life, director Yoav Shamir travels the world in search of the most modern manifestations of the “oldest hatred”, and comes up with some startling answers.
In this irreverent quest, he follows American Jewish leaders to the capitals of Europe, as they warn government officials of the growing threat of Antisemitism, and he tacks on to a class of Israeli high school students on a pilgrimage to Auschwitz.
On his way, Shamir meets controversial historian, Norman Finkelstein, who offers his views on the manner that Antisemitism is being used by the Jewish community and especially Israel for political gain. He also joins scholars, Stephen M. Walt and John J. Mearsheimer, while they give a lecture in Israel following the release of their book “The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy”, about the disproportional influence the Israel lobby in Washington enjoys.
Yoav visits Yad Vashem, the Holocaust memorial museum in Jerusalem, the must stop for all world leaders on their visits to Israel. While in Jerusalem, he drops by the house of his grandmother that offers her insight on the issue and declares that she is the “real Jew”.

My, how enlightening this is. Refreshing , even. One of the most important interviewees is Norman Finkelstein. One of the best quotes of the film is:

“The best thing that could ever happen to Israel is if they get rid of these American Jews, who are war-mongers from Martha’s Vineyard… and they’re war-mongers from the Hamptons… and they’re war-mongers from Beverly Hills… and they’re war-mongers from Miami. Its been a disaster for Israel. You know, its the best thing if they can get rid of this American Jewry. Its a curse.”

I hear ya. But the money-quote is an interaction at the end of Yoav Shamir’s interview, where Finkelstein does a Bellamy (Nazi) Salute in jest:

Yoav: “You compared (Abe) Foxman to Hitler, that’s kind of…”

Norman: “Its an insult to Hitler. Hitler, at least, didn’t do it for money.”

Made me smile.
