Why Do So Few Jews Live In The South?

I’ve mentioned several times here that I don’t know many Jews. This is from a person who has worked decades in the public and have met thousands and thousands of people over time. If I have met so few, then it makes sense that others have met even fewer. Dr Doug is friends with a Jewish family he met in Memphis (and he may know a few more). But most of my real-life friends tell me when I ask that they don’t know any.

I don’t know any banker Jews. I don’t know any Rabbis. I don’t know anyone that claims to “believe” their religion. Most are atheists. Even this Rabbi explains that it isn’t really about religion, but a form of “race” (intent on mixing all others down and keeping their lineage “clean”):

The few Jews I know or have met online are some of the most arrogant, untrustworthy, backstabbing liars and swindlers anyone could ever meet. Apparently, this is a long-term view of them. It appears that virtually every aspect of US history is fraught with their swindling and subsequent lies to cover-up and then deflect any blame towards others.

Seems like everyone wants to believe that white people (the vast majority were ultra-poor, btw) were the largest slave owners and that us whiteys were the ones instrumental is bringing them here. It simply is not true. More Jews had slaves that whites. By far. More Jews owned and shipped blacks here from other places. How the hell does poor whites manage to buy ships, etc?

Jews were also the first to take advantage of the situation between the north and south (which had very little to do with slavery, as much as the Jews want you to believe that via their indoctrination thru our “schools”). Like every other instance, they were asked to stop their unsavory theft and when they wouldn’t, they were banned from the south. Lew Rockwell shared an Oliver North article (The Day General Grant Expelled the Jews) which comes out and shows how Grant felt when writing to the Assistant Secretary of War, C.P. Walcott, on Dec 17, 1862:

I have long since believed that in spite of all the vigilance that can be infused into Post Commanders, that the Specie regulations of the Treasury Dept. have been violated, and that mostly by Jews and other unprincipled traders. So well satisfied of this have I been at this that I instructed the Commdg Officer at Columbus [Kentucky] to refuse all permits to Jews to come south, and frequently have had them expelled from the Dept. [of the Tennessee]. But they come in with their Carpet sacks in spite of all that can be done to prevent it. The Jews seem to be a privileged class that can travel any where. They will land at any wood yard or landing on the river and make their way through the country. If not permitted to buy Cotton themselves they will act as agents for someone else who will be at a Military post, with a Treasury permit to receive Cotton and pay for it in Treasury notes which the Jew will buy up at an agreed rate, paying gold.

There is but one way that I know of to reach this case. That is for Government to buy all the Cotton at a fixed rate and send it to Cairo, St Louis, or some other point to be sold. Then all traders, they are a curse to the Army, might be expelled..

Grant then penned General Order Number 11:

1. The Jews, as a class, violating every regulation of trade established by the Treasury Department, and also Department orders, are hereby expelled from the Department.

2. Within twenty-four hours from the receipt of this order by Post Commanders, they will see that all of this class of people are furnished with passes and required to leave, and anyone returning after such notification, will be arrested and held in confinement until an opportunity occurs of sending them out as prisoners, unless furnished with permits from these headquarters.

3. No permits will be given these people to visit headquarters for the purpose of making personal application for trade permits.

This was apparently something that more than one General had witnessed. The order went into effect:

The order went into immediate effect; Army officers ordered Jewish traders and their families in Holly Springs, Oxford, Mississippi, and Paducah, Kentucky to leave the territory. Grant may not have intended such results; his headquarters expressed no objection to the continued presence of Jewish sutlers, as opposed to cotton traders. But, the wording of the order addressed all Jews, regardless of occupation, and it was implemented accordingly.

People may not embrace Grant, but here is one instance where he got it right. We need another Grant for the entire USA.

  1. The slave trade percentage and overwhelming involvement of Jews, despite their small numbers, is particularly relevant. Less so, because of the number of football players with Jewish last names than the fact that Jews have, as part of their underminng strategy of the society as a whole, set non-white minorities against the white majority by attempting to create a Jewish/minority coalition through their famous fictional narratives. That should be deconstructed and African-Americans should be taught the truth about Jewish over-involvement in slavery as Jewish sleight of hand seeks to maneuver minorities against European-Americans.
    Farrakhan has been particularly forthright about Jewish involvement in the slave trade.

As someone raised in rural eastern North Carolina (as southern as it gets) and educated exclusively in NC, right through graduate school, I must say that my formative experience with Jews has been a good deal more benign. Ours was a small, farming community where there were only whites and blacks with English names and everyone was Protestant. I never met a Jew who I knew was a Jew until I went away to Davidson College near Charlotte. The only Roman Catholic I knew of was the home economics teacher from nearby Rocky Mount who my father, her boss, the principal, often praised as a really fine person and teacher, “even though she’s a Catholic.” (Come to think of it, just about the first male Catholic I can remember meeting was a fellow American lieutenant in Korea who was–unbelievably to me in that environment–“saving himself for marriage.”)

    I did not realize that the Rosenbloom-Levy and Epstein’s clothing stores in Rocky Mount were owned by Jews until long after I had left home. I had noticed a very small synagogue with a Star of David on it and wondered who the people might be who go there, but didn’t think much about it. Although they have tended to dominate the dry goods business throughout the South since colonial days, they have generally kept a very low profile, sort of like the Chinese in other places. Socially and politically, at least in the smaller towns, I think that on balance they have been a force for good. On that subject I would recommend the classic book by sociologist John P. Dollard, “Caste and Class in a Southern Town.” Their big contribution has been that they have been more likely to treat blacks just like they treat anyone else. At the same time, the local Jews have never been ones to rock the local political boat, even when it needed rocking. It would not have been good for business. Consequently, historically in the South there has been very, very little prejudice or even negative attitudes toward Jews. Among the whites, all that has been saved for blacks, and to a lesser degree among the more religiously doctrinaire, for Catholics.

    At this point I must note that among small-town Jews more or less in my neck of the woods (144 miles down I-95), there is one very notable exception. That is Dillon, SC, political boss and mentor to the Fed’s Ben Bernanke, referred to here http://www.karencares4u.com/page21.html as “the notorious Jewish criminal,” Alan Heller Schafer.

    My younger brother’s experience with Jews was somewhat different. By the time he came along some eight years later, my parents could afford to send him to a private summer camp near Durham one year. On the first day he encountered a group of fellow campers standing together and one of them announced to him, “We’re Jews, and you’re not going to like us.” His response was, “What’s a Jew?” He tells me that the kid’s prediction was correct.

    At Davidson, the two Jews were both students. Faculty members at that time were required to be Christian. Davidson was founded by Presbyterians and is supported by the Presbyterian Church. One of the two students, one of the few Yankees at Davidson, was a friend of mine. He was from Philadelphia and struck me as a regular, likable guy. We were both of the discriminated-against minority at the very preppy Davidson, non-fraternity members. Eighty-five percent of the student body was in one of the 12 Greek-letter fraternities (speaking of caste and class). The other Jew, if I remember correctly, was in the same snotty, superior-acting fraternity as Vince Foster. He carried himself in a way fitting a member of the ruling class of a small South Carolina town. If he wasn’t in Foster’s fraternity, then he was certainly in fellow South Carolinian John Spratt’s fraternity. See

    I encountered no Jews in my two years in the Army. Graduate school at UNC-Chapel Hill was very different. Right off the bat, I moved into an apartment with two other guys, both of whom were Jews from up North. A high percentage of the economics faculty was Jewish, and I was teaching assistant to two of them. A number of my classmates were Jews, as well. At that time, the big issue was the Vietnam War. I was against our involvement and so were the Jews, so we generally got along well. One of my apartment mates was a real jerk, but the other apartment mate–a good friend of mine–despised his fellow Jew a lot more than I did.

    I did get my first personal introduction to Zionism at Carolina. One of the two Jewish professors for whom I was a teaching assistant told me, in so many words, that a presidential candidates position on Israel trumped his position on the war, in his view. In my mind, that came pretty close to treason. He was definitely in a minority among the Jews I knew, though.

    My experience with Jews since then has been mixed. The fellow who serves as a model for the Doonesbury character lobbying for tyrants in Washington is a former close colleague of mine working for the Puerto Rican government in DC. I got along with him OK, but one could tell that he was very ambitious, and his resume concerning his Puerto Rico work is puffed beyond recognition.

    Another colleague with Puerto Rico, a young guy by the name of Cohen from New York City, had an interesting observation. This Cohen’s father was a non-practicing, assimilated Jew, and his mother was Episcopalian and he is a Christian. He said that from what he had seen of his father’s extended family, “Everything you’ve heard about Jews is right.”

    Finally, there’s the experience of my brother’s daughter, currently a grad student at UNC-Chapel Hill, following in her father’s and her uncle’s footsteps. Much to my brother’s dismay, she dated the son of a Maryland rabbi during most of her undergraduate days. She said he told her, meaning it as a compliment, I guess, that she seemed more Jewish than a lot of the Jewish girls he knew. I hate to say this, but I think he was right. Jewish values so dominate our culture these days, the younger members of society absorb and reflect them in many ways, quite unconsciously. She defended her boyfriend very vigorously when my brother passed on a NY Times article I sent him about the growing disproportion of girls to boys in college. He forgot that the email still included my comment, “Maybe this is why XXXX had to settle for the son of a rabbi.”

    But, predictably, with graduation approaching, he dumped her. Now she’s singing a different tune. One thing she told her father is very revealing, I think. The boyfriend, who looked very Jewish, confided to her his envy of a Jewish friend who didn’t look Jewish. “He doesn’t have to tip at restaurants,” he said. “I have to tip, because if I didn’t it would reflect badly on Jews.”

    By the way, in answer to the title question, there are few Jews in the South for the same reason that traditionally there have been few Italians, Poles, Greeks, Irish, and other later immigrants. The rigid economic system built on slavery and then on sharecropping had few places for them.

    • Like you, I never realized that Memphis’ famous department stores, Goldsmiths, Lowensteins and Gerbers, were owned and operated by wealthy Jewish families.

      I never met a Jew that I know of until I went to college at the University of Memphis formerly Memphis State. And to my utter shame I actually dated this person for a while. He wore his yarmulke all the time, which I never did understand. He was a strange young man. Now I know why.

      But, I do remember my very Jewish attorney during my first divorce. He was a charismatic, large man with a seemingly generous personality. Unfortunately, for him, during one of our meetings he tried to seduce me so I found another lawyer, quickly.

      • Sounds like your lawyer had the sort of Woody Allen morality that is virtually celebrated by Hollywood. The casting couch is a longstanding tradition there. Bartley Crum, the Zionist scum and calumniator of the great American patriot, James Forrestal, got poetic justice when his wife was seduced by her Jewish psychiatrist.   3. Okay, I admit it was a cheap shot to call Alan Heller Schafer Ben Bernanke’s “mentor.” It was too inviting to pass up, but it is guilt by association. I really don’t know of any connection between the two other than the fact that Bernanke worked at South of the Border in the summers as a young man and that they both happen to be Jewish. There aren’t a whole lot of jobs available in Dillon County. I might have done the same if I were in Ben’s place. That’s not to say that I have any use for him.

  7. Well, I guess they all settled in Memphis, TN (my hometown). The Loeb family migrated from Germany to Memphis in the 1860’s. And Henry Loeb was Mayor of Memphis for two terms in the 1960’s and 70’s. I didn’t understand what Jews were then being only a child. I lived in Memphis over 40 years and only met a few that I know of, although, it’s possible I met many more but was unaware of who they were at the time. I have a new respect for Grant after reading this. Thanks for the history lesson.

    • I’m glad you stopped by. I didn’t realize you were a hometown girl (I live within 1.5 hours of Memphis, near Pickwick).

      It is very possible that I have met Jews who hid the fact, since many of the ones I know have changed their name for one reason or another (a telltale sign of unscrupulousness). Around this small town, or the one I grew up in in N MS, I don’t know of any.
